What on earth are we doing to our planet?

    Earth Exploding

This Is Our Doing

Ice shelves in both the Arctic & Antarctic are melting at a rate that no scientist would have ever predicted.  As we learned in Al Gore's documentary An Inconvenient Truth,  thousands of Polar bears who can swim up to 60 starving in the Arcticmiles are drowning as they swim in search of a meal.  In search of an ice pad to rest upon the beautiful bears soon find the ice solids that they count on for their survival are just not there.  Exhausted, the mighty bear eventually can not swim another stroke, bringing them to a pointless and preventable death caused by none other than the conveniences and luxuries of man.

The U.N. Climate Panel, projects that worldmelting atmospheric temperature will rise by between 1.8 and 4.0 degrees Celsius because of emissions of greenhouse gases that could bring floods, droughts, heat waves and more powerful storms.

As glaciers and ice sheets melt, they can raise overall ocean levels and swamp low-lying areas.

Bottled Water Means Garabage...

1.5 million tons of plastic waste each year

According to Food and Water Watch, that plastic requires up to 47 million gallons of oil per year to produce. And while the plastic used to bottle beverages is of high quality and in demand by recyclers, over 80 percent of plastic bottles are simply thrown away. That assumes empty bottles actually make it to a garbage can. Plastic waste is now at such a volume that vast eddies of current-bound plastic trash now spin endlessly in the world's major oceans. Plastic Water Bottles are filling our landfillsThis represents a great risk to marine life, killing birds and fish which mistake our garbage for food.  Thanks to its slow decay rate, the vast majority of all plastics ever produced      still exist  ...

Exactly How To Kill An Ocean

Catching More Than Fish

A new study finds that millions of sea turtles may be victims of commercial fishing.

Healthy ecosystems sustain life—from providing food and clean water to supplying medicines and raw materials. Humans influence the health and vitality of virtually every ecosystem on the planet. If managed well, ecosystems are resilient and people can continue to rely on them for generations to come. However, managing ecosystems effectively means understanding the stress caused by human activity and finding ways to mitigate that stress.
The Marine Conservation Initiative believes that the two largest, yet most solvable, threats to the oceans are overfishing (including bycatch and discards of unwanted catch) and habitat alteration (including coastal development, damaging resource extraction, and aquaculture). Through science, strategic communications, and policy reform, the Initiative works to improve ocean management and reach our goal of productive, healthy marine ecosystems today and for future generations.

Sea turtles bycatch

The number of sea turtles inadvertently caught by commercial fishing gear during the past 20 years may reach into the millions, according to the first peer-reviewed study to compile sea turtle bycatch data from gillnet, trawl and longline fisheries worldwide. Six of the world’s seven species of sea turtles are currently listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. “Loggerhead turtles die the same way in the Mediterranean, where boats from 21 countries hunt for tuna and swordfish. These two areas are urgent conservation priorities.” Extinction crisis continues apace: The latest update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species shows that 17,291 species out of the 47,677 assessed species are threatened with extinction. Global Bycatch Assessment of Long-lived Species was designed to characterize the bycatch of marine mammals, seabirds and sea turtles by synthesizing existing information and developing new analytical and quantitative tools to assess bycatch effects

bycatch thresher shark

Doomed by a gill net, a thresher shark in Mexico's Gulf of California is among an estimated 40 million sharks killed yearly for their fins. Removing top predators,

such as sharks and bluefin tuna, from the ecosystem can degrade marine habitats. Fins of thresher sharks

are cut off and collected on the shores of San Marcos Island, Mexico. Shark fin is used, primarily in Asia, to make shark fin soup—a delicacy widely consumed in China since at least the start of the Sung dynasty

in A.D. 960. As incomes increase in Asia,

the demand for shark fin grows. Fishermen remove more than 170 billion pounds of wildlife a year

from the seas. A new study suggests that

our current appetite could soon

lead to a worldwide fisheries collapse.

Tragic Loss Of Marine Life On The California Coast

Scientists examine dead blue whale and her 17 ft. baby calf (fetus) on San Mateo County beach

80-foot Blue whale weighing over 75 tons, with her calf fetus found washed up on a California coast. The 17 ft. fetus was most likely born after death from a discharge of gas pressure. Its

been over 3 decades since a blue whale landed on a local beachnd quantitative tools to assess bycatch effects and risk.  Blue whales are the largest animals known to exist. They can grow to 110 feet in length and weigh up to 180 tons.

"Its heart is probably the size and weight of a Volkswagen Beetle," Oliver said.

 Haiti
Update  October 24, 2010 - January 12th, the worst earthquake in 200 years - 7.0 in magnitude - struck less than ten miles from the Caribbean city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The initial quake was later followed by twelve aftershocks greater than magnitude 5.0. Structures of all kinds were damaged or collapsed,
from shantytown homes to national landmarks.
Scientists say this could be the beginning of a

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Gulf Rescue Efforts Still Continue 6 Months Later

Wednesday will mark six months since BP's oil began spewing into the Gulf of Mexico  last April.
The oil is no longer flowing from the well, but the impact from the use of "dispersant" chemicals that have been sprayed all over the water and coastal areas, continues.  The devastation to marine
life and entire ecosystems from this
environmental disaster is just beginning
to be understood...

Obama administration
lifts deepwater drilling moratorium

The Obama administration is lifting the moratorium on deepwater oil drilling that was put in place after the Gulf oil disaster, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Tuesday.  Salazar and the new head of the government agency overseeing offshore drilling, Michael Bromwich, were scheduled to hold a 1 p.m. news conference on the issue.  Salazar suspended certain deepwater drilling activities on July 12 under the premise that certain deepwater drilling posed a threat to the marine, coastal, and human environment. Damage still haunts Gulf

Since then, Salazar has determined that deepwater oil and gas drilling can resume provided that operators certify compliance with all existing rules and requirements, including those that recently went into effect, the Department of Interior said in a press release.  Members of industry must also demonstrate the availability of adequate blowout containment resources, the department said.

“We have more work to do in our reform agenda, but at this point we believe the strengthened safety measures we have implemented, along with improved spill response and blowout containment capabilities, have reduced risks to a point where operators who play by the rules and clear the higher bar can be allowed to resume," Salazar said. " The oil and gas industry will be operating under tighter rules, stronger oversight, and in a regulatory environment that will remain dynamic as we continue to build on the reforms we have already implemented.”

US sea turtles affected by Gulf oil spill now face drowning in shrimp nets

BYM Environmental News, August 25, 2010

The very turtles that have been lucky enough to escape harm from the oil spill face the very real
threat of drowning in shrimp nets. These nets are pulled by fishermen who historically have not complied with federal regulations, which require the use of Turtle Excluder Devices—simple devices placed at the end of trawl nets that allow sea
turtles to escape from shrimp nets before being drowned.
Recycling is an essential factor in saving our forests.
Better yet, GO Paperless whenever you can!

North America, has the largest rate of paper products consumption per capita Forests are being stripped of beautiful trees
in the world. An individual person is estimated to use 692 pounds of paper
each year.

This adds up to 235,855,627,052 lbs. every year for the entire population*

(*based on stats taken in 2009 of N.A .population of 340,831,831, use the
tool link below to convert lbs. paper into trees)

Environmental impacts of the paper industry are anti
environmental in two ways:
1st, Paper mills are one of the worst polluters to air, sea and land. Reports
state that, "Each year millions of pounds of highly toxic chemicals such
as chlorine dioxide, toluene, methanol, hydrochloric acid, and formaldehyde are
released into the air and water from paper making plants around the world."
2nd, Some old forests which are impossible to re-grow because of their
mature age, are cut down each year to make paper. These forests only make up
about 11% of the industry's supply for paper, but there are many alternatives
to cutting down trees available for the paper industry.
Recycling keeps 45% of paper out of landfills each year, and wood substitutes in paper production are
becoming increasingly popular. Agricultural waste left over from harvesting (wheat, barley, etc.), hemp
(though it now has to be imported because of the illegality of marijuana), a wood-free fiber plant called
and Kenaf, related to cotton, can all be made into paper without cutting down any trees, and agricultural
waste is used now as a wood substitute. The only reason that paper mills are not moving from paper to other
materials is because the changes in machinery that would make it possible to produce hemp and Kenaf paper
would cost 10’s of millions of dollars. But what are the costs if we continue on the destructive path we are
on now?
